⚠️ Safety tip: Flatten and cut the falafel balls in half or quarters for younger toddlers to prevent choking — don't just squash them. Use finely ground sesame (or tahini) mixed into the dough rather than sprinkling whole sesame seeds on top, since whole or chopped seeds are a choking hazard for young children. Always quarter cherry tomatoes lengthways and cut cucumber into small soft sticks for every age group, and check for sesame allergy before serving.

🌱 How it helps them grow
Chickpeas and sweet potato provide plant-based protein and iron to support growth and energy, and the fibre in this recipe helps keep digestion comfortable. Holding and chewing these soft, baked bites as finger food lets little ones practise hand-eye coordination and chewing, while the naturally sweet orange colour and mild spices introduce new flavours that help children get used to a varied diet.
🤓 Did you know?
Sweet potatoes aren't actually potatoes at all — they're roots from a plant related to the morning glory flower, and their bright orange colour comes from the same pigment that makes carrots orange.

👶 How to serve it by age
🍼 1–2 years
Flatten the balls well and cut each one in half before serving to make them easy and safe to chew. The sesame is finely ground and mixed into the dough rather than sprinkled whole on top, which is safer for this age. Always quarter cherry tomatoes lengthways and cut cucumber into small soft sticks — never give them whole or round.
🧸 2–3 years
Cut each ball in half or quarters rather than just squashing it flat, so every piece is bite-sized. The sesame is ground into the dough, not left as whole seeds on the surface, which lowers the choking risk. Quarter cherry tomatoes lengthways and cut cucumber into small soft sticks before serving.
🎒 3–5 years
Serve as finger food with hummus or yogurt dip for little hands to enjoy. The sesame is mixed into the dough rather than sprinkled whole on top. Still quarter cherry tomatoes lengthways and cut cucumber into small soft sticks, as whole round pieces are a choking risk at any age in this range.
