History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 All over Mexico📅 Colonial era🍚 MX

Rice pudding came to Mexico from Spain, where it had arrived through Moorish cooking. Mexican cooks made it their own with canela, the soft, sweet Ceylon cinnamon used in Mexican kitchens, and later with condensed milk.

It's sold in markets and served in homes year-round, often for breakfast or merienda (afternoon snack).

⭐ Why It's Famous

Creamy, sweet and fragrant with cinnamon, it's the dessert of grandmothers' kitchens.

💡 Fun Fact

Mexico is one of the world's largest importers of Ceylon cinnamon from Sri Lanka, largely because of dishes like this and café de olla.
