The Story Behind the Dish
Jalao is one of the oldest Dominican sweets, made from two ingredients the island has in abundance: coconuts and honey. Its name is often linked to 'jalar' (to pull), describing the sticky, chewy texture.
It's sold by street vendors and in small shops alongside other coconut sweets.
⭐ Why It's Famous
Chewy, honeyed and full of coconut, it's a simple sweet with a lot of charm.
💡 Fun Fact
Because it keeps for days without refrigeration, jalao has long been a practical sweet to sell on the roadside.
