Soften the oats
Put the rolled oats in a bowl or the blender jug with the milk and let them sit for about 10 minutes. This small soak softens the oats so the smoothie blends silky-smooth instead of gritty.
- 40 g rolled oats
- 250 ml whole milk
✅ C'est prêt quand : oats look soft and have soaked up most of the milk

Prep the fruit
While the oats soak, peel the mangoes and banana. Cut off one banana coin and one small mango triangle and set them aside for the garnish in step 5, then chop the rest of the mango and banana into small chunks. Pick fruit that is really ripe and sweet-smelling for the best colour and flavour.
- 2 mangoes
- 1 banana
✅ C'est prêt quand : fruit is chopped into small, even chunks, with the garnish pieces set aside
Blend it all

The Story Behind the Dish
The Philippines is famous worldwide for its Carabao mango, prized for being exceptionally sweet with almost no fibrous tang, and sold fresh, dried or juiced across the islands. Blending ripe mango with banana and milk into a thick drink has long been a way to use very ripe fruit and give children something sweet without any added sugar.
Adding rolled oats is a newer, practical twist from home kitchens and school canteens looking for a filling, fibre-rich breakfast that still tastes like a treat. It turns an everyday fruit shake into something substantial enough to carry a small child through a busy morning.
⭐ Why It's Famous
It tastes like dessert but is simply fruit, oats and milk, which is exactly why parents and picky toddlers both love it.
💡 Fun Fact
The Carabao mango, the Philippines' most prized variety, is loved worldwide for its intense sweetness and smooth, almost fibre-free flesh, and is often eaten fresh, dried, or blended into drinks and desserts.
