Étapes

Chill everything

Chill everything

Make sure the milk and orange juice are very cold, almost icy, before you start. This is the key step that stops the milk from curdling when it meets the acidic juice.

✅ C'est prêt quand : milk and juice feel very cold to the touch, close to 4°C/40°F

Sweeten the milk

Sweeten the milk

Pour the milk into a large jug with the sugar, vanilla and one handful of ice. Stir well until the sugar fully dissolves.

  • 500 ml milk
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 handful ice cubes

✅ C'est prêt quand : no sugar grains remain and the milk tastes sweet

Add the orange juice slowly

Add the orange juice slowly

Pour the orange juice into the sweetened milk from step 2 in a thin, slow stream while stirring constantly. Always add the juice to the milk, never the other way round.

  • 500 ml orange juice

✅ C'est prêt quand : mixture turns a smooth, even pale orange with no curdled flecks

Serve

Serve

Taste the drink from step 3 and stir in a little more sugar if you like it sweeter. Serve right away in tall glasses over the remaining handful of ice.

  • 1 handful ice cubes

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Dominican Republic📅 20th century🍊 DO

Morir soñando ('to die dreaming') is one of the Dominican Republic's most popular drinks, sold at colmados, cafeterías and street stands, especially on hot afternoons.

The poetic name is said to describe how it feels to drink one on a sweltering Caribbean day: so delicious you could die dreaming.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Creamy, tangy and refreshing, it tastes like an orange creamsicle in a glass.

💡 Fun Fact

The trick of adding juice to cold milk slowly is passed down in Dominican families, because warm milk or fast pouring makes it curdle.
