History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Havana, then Tampa and Miami📅 Late 19th–early 20th century🥪 CU

The Cuban sandwich grew up between Havana and Florida. Cuban cigar workers in Key West and Tampa's Ybor City carried it to work in the late 1800s, and later Cuban exiles made it famous in Miami.

Tampa and Miami still argue over the 'real' recipe: Tampa adds salami, a nod to the Italian immigrants who worked alongside the Cubans.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Crisp, buttery bread, melted cheese and tangy pickles with two kinds of pork: it's one of the best-loved sandwiches in the Americas.

💡 Fun Fact

In 2012 the city of Tampa officially declared its version, with salami, the 'Historic Tampa Cuban Sandwich'.
