Steps

Toast the bread
Toast the bread on a medium-low setting for 1-2 minutes, until just warm and barely golden at the edges but still soft in the middle. If serving a baby under 18 months, cut off the crusts right after toasting.
- 2 slices bread
✅ Done when: edges barely golden, center still soft

Mash the avocado
Halve the avocado, scoop the flesh into a bowl, and mash it with a fork along with the lime juice and yogurt until smooth and creamy.
- 1 avocado
- 1 tsp (5 ml) lime juice
- 1 tbsp (15 g) yogurt
✅ Done when: smooth, no lumps, bright green color

Spread and season
Spread the mashed avocado over the toast, all the way to the edges. For toddlers over two, drizzle on the olive oil and add a tiny pinch of cumin or paprika.
- all mashed avocado from step 2
- 2 slices toast from step 1
- 1/2 tsp olive oil
- 1 small pinch cumin or paprika
✅ Done when: avocado spread evenly to the edges with no bare spots

Cut into fingers
Cut each slice into about 4 strips, roughly 1.5 cm (0.6 in) wide, so they are easy for small hands to pick up.
- 2 slices spread avocado toast from step 3
✅ Done when: strips are even and about 1.5 cm wide

Make it fun
Arrange the fingers like sun rays on the plate and dot a few pieces of diced carrot or pea on top as polka dots.
- 8 strips avocado toast fingers from step 4
- 2 tbsp diced carrot or peas

Pack or store
Avocado browns quickly once cut, so it is best eaten fresh. If you need to keep leftovers, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the mashed avocado and refrigerate for up to 1 day; it does not freeze well.
- any leftover amount mashed avocado from step 2
✅ Done when: plastic wrap pressed flat against the avocado with no air pockets, chilled

The Story Behind the Dish
Avocado toast as a dish grew out of California's long love of avocados, which thrive in the state's climate and have been a kitchen staple there for generations. Cafés across the US turned the simple combination of toast and mashed avocado into a brunch icon, prized for being quick, fresh and endlessly adaptable.
This soft, finger-shaped version brings the same idea into the family kitchen: parents mash ripe avocado onto gently toasted bread and cut it into easy-grip strips, so even the youngest eaters can join in the avocado toast tradition safely.
⭐ Why It's Famous
It's loved for being fast, wholesome and endlessly customizable, with a creamy texture that even babies with no teeth can manage.
