History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Dominican coast📅 Traditional🦐 DO

Along the Dominican coast, seafood is cooked 'guisado', in the same Creole tomato and pepper sauce used for chicken and beef. Prawns cook in minutes, which makes this one of the quickest Dominican stews.

It's popular in seaside towns and restaurants, especially during Lent, when many Dominican families eat seafood instead of meat.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Sweet prawns in a bright, savoury Creole sauce make a quick, festive meal.

💡 Fun Fact

The same sauce is used for 'langosta guisada', stewed lobster, a special-occasion dish in Dominican coastal towns.
