Steps

Boil and mash potatoes
Put the potatoes in a pot, cover with the water, bring to a boil and cook for about 15 minutes, until a knife slides in easily. Drain well, then mash with the butter and milk until smooth and soft; set aside.
- 500 g potatoes
- 1 L water
- 20 g butter
- 60 ml whole milk
✅ Done when: potatoes are soft enough to mash easily

Soften the vegetables
While the potatoes cook, warm the olive oil in a wide pan over medium heat. Add the onion and carrot and cook for 6–7 minutes, stirring now and then, until the carrot is fully soft (hard carrot can be a choking risk for little ones).
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion
- 1 carrot
✅ Done when: carrot is fully soft

The Story Behind the Dish
Shepherd's pie grew out of a thrifty kitchen habit: leftover roast meat, chopped or minced, was stretched with gravy and vegetables and topped with mashed potato to make a second, filling meal. In Ireland, with potatoes central to the table since the 18th century, the mashed topping was a natural, well-loved finish.
Traditionally shepherd's pie uses lamb or mutton, while the beef version is often called cottage pie, but Irish kitchens have long used whichever meat was on hand. Adding lentils is a modern, family-kitchen touch that keeps all the cosy flavour while boosting iron and fibre for growing children.
⭐ Why It's Famous
It is Ireland's great comfort food: soft mashed potato over a rich, savoury meat filling, baked until golden — simple, warming and endlessly adaptable for family cooking.
💡 Fun Fact
The potato became such a staple of the Irish table that whole family meals, shepherd's pie included, were built around having a good mash on top.
