History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Japan (Uji, Kyoto for matcha)📅 Matcha: 12th century; ice cream: 20th century🍵 JP

Matcha, powdered green tea, was brought to Japan by the Zen monk Eisai in the 12th century and became the heart of the tea ceremony. The finest matcha still comes from Uji, near Kyoto.

Ice cream arrived in Japan in the late 19th century, and matcha ice cream became popular in the second half of the 20th century. Today it's sold everywhere, from temple-side shops in Kyoto to convenience stores.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Its gentle bitterness balances the sweetness of the cream, making it less sugary than most ice creams.

💡 Fun Fact

Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves; covering the plants before harvest boosts their chlorophyll and gives matcha its vivid green colour.
