History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Havana📅 Early 20th century🥪 CU

The medianoche ('midnight') got its name because it was the snack of choice in Havana's nightclubs and theatres after shows. It has the same fillings as the Cuban sandwich but uses a softer, sweeter egg bread.

Today it's sold in every Cuban café in Miami, often smaller than a Cubano.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Sweet bread, salty meats and melted cheese: it's the perfect late-night bite.

💡 Fun Fact

Pan de medianoche is similar to Jewish challah, and some bakers in Miami use challah as a substitute.
