Steps

Chill the glass

Chill the glass

Fill a rocks glass (old-fashioned glass) with ice and water and let it sit while you build the drink. This stops the finished Negroni from warming up the moment it hits the glass.

✅ Done when: the glass feels cold to the touch

Measure the three spirits

Measure the three spirits

Into a mixing glass or any sturdy glass jug, pour the gin, sweet vermouth and Campari. Keeping them exactly equal is the whole secret of a Negroni, so measure rather than guess.

  • 30 ml gin
  • 30 ml sweet vermouth
  • 30 ml Campari

History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Florence, Tuscany📅 Early 20th century🍸 IT

The Negroni is said to have been born in Florence when Count Camillo Negroni asked a bartender to strengthen his favourite Americano by swapping the soda water for gin. The bartender kept the same bittersweet backbone of Campari and sweet vermouth but gave the drink more spine, and the Count's name stuck to it.

From there it spread through Italy's café culture as an aperitivo, the drink taken before dinner to wake up the appetite, and eventually travelled the world as one of the most ordered classic cocktails in any serious bar.

⭐ Why It's Famous

It distills the Italian idea of the aperitivo into three equal pours: bitter, sweet and strong, perfectly balanced and endlessly drinkable.

💡 Fun Fact

Bartenders often judge a bar by how well it makes a Negroni, since with only three ingredients and no shaking, there is nowhere for sloppy technique to hide.
