History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Catalonia, Spain📅 Medieval (14th century)🍮 ES

Crema catalana appears in Catalan cookbooks from the Middle Ages, which makes it one of Europe's oldest custard desserts. It's also called crema de Sant Josep, because it's traditionally eaten on 19 March, Saint Joseph's Day, which is Father's Day in Spain.

Unlike French crème brûlée, it's made with milk instead of cream, thickened on the stove and flavoured with citrus and cinnamon.

⭐ Why It's Famous

It's Catalonia's signature dessert and a must in Barcelona restaurants.

💡 Fun Fact

Catalan cooks burn the sugar with a special round iron called a 'pala de cremar', heated on the fire.
