History & Culture

The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Central and northern Mexico📅 20th century🌯 MX

Flautas, meaning 'flutes', are named for their long, thin shape. In some regions, especially when made with smaller tortillas, they're called taquitos or tacos dorados (golden tacos).

They're a classic way of using leftover meat, and are sold at fondas, markets and street stalls all over the country.

⭐ Why It's Famous

The contrast of crunchy fried tortilla with cool crema and fresh salsa is irresistible.

💡 Fun Fact

Some cooks distinguish them by tortilla: flautas use large flour or corn tortillas, while taquitos are made with small corn ones.
