The Story Behind the Dish

📍 San Juan📅 1950s🍍 PR

The piña colada was born in San Juan in the 1950s. The Caribe Hilton hotel credits its bartender Ramón 'Monchito' Marrero with creating it in 1954, while the Barrachina restaurant in Old San Juan also claims it. The invention of canned cream of coconut (Coco López) in Puerto Rico made it possible.

In 1978, Puerto Rico declared the piña colada its national drink.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Creamy, sweet and tropical, it's the taste of a Caribbean holiday in a glass.

💡 Fun Fact

'Piña colada' means 'strained pineapple', from the fresh pineapple juice that was strained to make it.
