The Story Behind the Dish

📍 Santo Domingo📅 20th century🍔 DO

The Dominican chimichurri, or 'chimi', has nothing to do with the Argentine herb sauce. It's a burger sold from brightly lit street carts in Dominican cities and in New York's Dominican neighbourhoods.

Chimi carts are busiest late at night, after parties and baseball games.

⭐ Why It's Famous

Messy, crunchy and saucy, it's the ultimate Dominican late-night snack.

💡 Fun Fact

Some chimi carts also offer a version with pork (chimi de cerdo) or a fried egg on top.
